If you want to sell mystery boxes online, there are two common routes. You can rent: a hosted store plus a mystery box app, paid monthly. Or you can own: a self-hosted script, paid once, on your own server. This post compares what each costs over three years, using prices from the vendors' own pages, and is honest about where renting is the better deal.

What a hosted setup charges

A common hosted route is a Shopify store with a mystery box app. Prices below were checked on the vendors' pages in October 2026, in US dollars. Check them again before you decide, because they change.

What self-hosting costs

Payment processing fees apply on both routes, so they're left out of the comparison.

Three years, side by side

This is an illustration, not a quote. It assumes Shopify Basic billed yearly, the Chancey Pro plan, and two levels of box sales. The self-hosted column assumes PrizeX and $15 a month for hosting.

Over 36 monthsHosted: $4,000/month box salesHosted: $8,000/month box salesSelf-hosted (any volume)
Store or software$1,044 (Shopify Basic, $29 × 36)$1,044$149 (PrizeX, one-time)
Mystery box app$1,800 (Pro, $49.99 × 36)$1,800Included
App fee on sales over $5,000/month$0$2,160 (2% of $3,000 × 36)$0

Totalabout $2,844about $5,004about $689

The gap widens with volume, because the hosted app charges a share of every box sold beyond its allowance, while self-hosted software charges nothing per sale. At very low volume the gap is smaller, and Chancey's free or Starter plan could cost less than the self-hosted hosting bill alone.

What hosted does better

Self-hosting isn't the right answer for everyone:

Self-hosting fits when mystery boxes are the core of the business, when volume is high enough that per-sale fees add up, or when you want features a store app doesn't offer. In PrizeX those include odds published on every box page, odds that lock after the first opening, daily opening limits, coin, digital and coupon prizes, and a wallet shared with auctions and games. Our mystery box script checklist covers what to look for.

The legal question is the same on both routes. Paid random prizes are regulated as gambling or loot boxes in some countries, especially when prizes can be turned into money. Hosted platforms also have their own rules about what you can sell. The operator is responsible, so check with a local lawyer, and don't sell paid boxes to under-18s.

Common questions

How much does a mystery box platform cost?

Hosted, expect a store plan plus a mystery box app, often with a share of sales above an allowance. In October 2026 Shopify Basic was $29–$39 a month, and one app's plans ran from free to $49.99 a month plus 2% over the allowance. Self-hosted, PrizeX is $149 one-time plus your hosting.

Is self-hosting a mystery box site cheaper?

Over three years it usually is once sales pass a few thousand dollars a month, because there's no per-sale platform fee. At very low volume a hosted free or starter plan can cost less.

What does a hosted platform do better?

It runs the servers, checkout and security for you, and gets you live faster. If nobody on your team wants to run a server, that's worth paying for.

Do payment processing fees apply either way?

Yes. Card and wallet processing fees apply on both routes. On Shopify, an extra 2% applies if you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments on the Basic plan.
